This Body II Workshop

This Body II by Renee Watson is a poem about loving our bodies. It’s a praise poem of the self and the physical attributes that come together to form us. In this workshop, we will explore the poem, This Body II, discussing the ways the poem is a self-portrait and an honoring of legacy. Students are tasked to write a poem that is both a self-portrait and a praise poem of themselves!

Glory and the Continuing Civil Rights Movement

In this workshop, students will compare the music video for Glory by John Legend and Common with archival footage of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s March on Washington, and draw parallels between the lyrics of  Glory and Dr. King’s I Have a Dream speech. Afterward, we will analyze Alicia Garza’s speech Why Black Lives Matter, to discover how Common and Legend draw parallels between the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and the Black Lives Matter Movement occurring when the song Glory was written.
