Some of the greatest written works of our time have been inspired by music. Walt Whitman wrote “Leaves of Grass” while listening to opera, while Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical “Hamilton” was born of his love of hip-hop. In this workshop, we will explore the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat and a method he employed in his poetry and paintings - describing in words and/or images what we hear or feel inspired to create through music. We will use curated playlists to provoke imagery, name feelings, borrow words, and build a message, then utilize these to develop a short story or poem.
